Why Success Doesn’t Always Bring Happiness for Immigrant Businesswomen

You’ve done amazing things as an immigrant businesswoman, but happiness still feels far away. This is common, and understanding why can help you find true joy. Let’s look at three reasons.

1. Obstacles and Challenges

The real problem is often the root cause of the issue. When we find the root cause, we can solve the problem faster without making ourselves a problem to fix. Whether the problem is a circumstance, thought, feeling, or action, identifying the real issue allows us to address it effectively.

Example: You might have a dream career but still feel unfulfilled because the root cause is a belief that you’re not good enough. By addressing this belief, you can start to feel more satisfied with your achievements.

Quick Win: Take a moment to write down one recurring problem and think about whether it’s caused by a thought, feeling, or action. This simple step can help you start addressing the real issue.

2. Emotional Exhaustion and Fatigue

Creating a different relationship with emotions and finding the internal cause of our feelings can help reduce emotional exhaustion and fatigue. Often, hidden beliefs or “rules” we’ve picked up cause this tiredness. By redefining these beliefs to match who we really are, we can feel more energized.

Example: You might have a dream house but feel constantly tired because you believe you must always be perfect. Changing this belief can help you feel more relaxed and energized.

Quick Win: Identify one belief or rule you follow that might be making you tired and consider how you can change it. This can help you start feeling better right away.

3. Struggling to Feel Joyful

Giving ourselves permission to feel joyful emotions, practicing knowing and naming our feelings, and learning how to manage our thoughts can help us create a healthy and joyful relationship with ourselves and others. This way, external circumstances have little to no control over us.

Example: You might have a dream marriage but still not feel happy because you believe you need to achieve more to be worthy of joy. By giving yourself permission to feel joyful now, you can start experiencing more positive emotions.

Quick Win: Think about one recent achievement and how you felt afterward. What might be stopping you from feeling joy? Reflecting on this can help you start experiencing more positive emotions.
